Parallel vs. crossed linkages

When this space ship raises its head, the parallel 4-bar linkage keeps it level. This results in a rather 'mechanical' impression, as of an elevator.
When this space ship raises its head, the crossed 4-bar linkage makes the head tilt even further than the neck, resulting in a more organic impression; it reminds of a bird stretching out its neck.
The model depicted here, can be changed from a crossed link to a parallel link by just pulling a 'switch'. It makes a nice demonstration model.
